Let the project determine the hole dimensions

The width of a post does not establish the required hole or footing. Obtain that specification from the project’s instructions and applicable site requirements, then select a suitable digging tool. An auger’s advertised diameter is a tool dimension, not a structural design recommendation.

The Fiskars QuikDrill M 1000638 provides a manual-auger example with a stated nominal diameter. Use the model-specific measurement in the buying guide to compare fit. Check depth capability and the manufacturer’s limits separately, especially when roots, stones or restricted access affect the job.

Allow room to operate safely

A rotating handle and a two-handle digger require different working movements. Measure the clearance beside nearby walls or fences and plan how soil will be lifted out. Before digging in the US, follow the 811 process for your state, including its waiting period and confirmation of utility responses.
