Measure growing space and access separately

Mark the bed’s outside footprint and leave room for the way you garden: standing, kneeling or working from a seat. Check whether you can reach the planting area without stepping into it, and allow space for a hose, tools or a cart along the paths.

Use the actual internal dimensions and intended fill depth to estimate growing-medium volume. In feet, length × width × filled depth gives cubic feet; divide by 27 for cubic yards. An elevated planter’s overall height includes its legs and does not establish root depth.

Plan the base and watering before assembly

Confirm whether the model has an open bottom, a supporting floor or a liner, and follow its installation instructions. University of Minnesota Extension advises choosing a location with suitable light and access to water; raised beds can dry faster than the surrounding ground.

Compare a garden hose with a drip layout before filling the bed. For a smaller or more flexible arrangement, explore grow bags.
